Location Description

Come to Howick... and fall in love!

In the past 30 years Howick has transformed from a sleepy seaside village to one of the most rapidly growing and exciting suburbs in Auckland. At the same time, Howick has maintained the tranquility it has at heart and combined the best of the old with the new. Even 120 years ago New Zealand newspapers referred to 'Historical Howick' as a major destination for a weekend retreat. Owairoa (the Maori name for Howick) is indeed a very desirable part of Tamaki Makaurau - Land of 100 Lovers!

Visitors Centre

Howick has a community centre right in the heart of the Howick Village Square. There you will find all the information you need to know about the area.
The centre is open Mon-Fri 10.00am - 4.00pm, Saturday 10.00am - 12.00pm or contacted on (09) 534 4796 for friendly advice.

Attractions

  • Howick Historical Village comprises 30 restored buildings of the 1840 to 1880 period. They include New Zealand's oldest courthouse and 14 buildings built by the 'Fencibles', retired soldiers who were given a free passage to New Zealand in return for protecting Auckland.

  • Shamrock Cottage used to be the area's 'wet canteen' - the pub! It now serves meals and refreshments.

  • All Saints Church was the first building to be erected in Howick. Prefabricated in Auckland, it was brought to Howick by sea.

  • The Uxbridge Creative Leisure Centre offers courses, exhibitions and events covering the visual and performing arts and other activities.
